Frequently Asked Questions
For sizing, what if my child's weight is right at the limit of the size range?
Children's life jackets are sized based on weight, and we strongly recommend following the USCG sizing guide to ensure the best fit. If your child’s weight falls at the upper or lower limit of a size range, we encourage you to check the jacket’s specific measurements in each product description on our website, as children’s body proportions can vary. To help you find the perfect fit, we offer free returns through our partner, REDO, if you’d like to try multiple sizes. Please note that to qualify for a return, all tags—including the Think Safe pamphlet—must remain attached exactly as received.
What PFDs are required to be carried on my recreational boat?
Federal law requires that you must have a Coast Guard-approved, wearable PFD in good and serviceable condition, and of an appropriate size for each person onboard your vessel.
Boats longer than 16 feet must carry a Coast Guard-approved throwable device (Type IV). A throwable device is not required on canoes or kayaks regardless of length. For more information on exemptions and the proper use of life jackets, see: https://www.uscgboating.org/assets/1/AssetManager/Boaters-Guide-to-Federal-Requirements-for-Receational-Boats-20231108.pdf
When should individuals wear a PFD?
The US Coast Guard recommends everyone always wear a PFD on a vessel that is underway.
When must children under 13 years of age wear a PFD?
Children under 13 years of age must wear an appropriate U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable PFD on a vessel that is underway, unless below deck or within an enclosed cabin.
If a state has established a child life jacket wear requirement that differs from the Coast Guard requirement, then the state requirement will be applicable on waters subject to that state's jurisdiction. Contact the state boating authority where you are operating for more information.
How often should I test my PFDs?
Every year. At the beginning of the season, check the buckles are functioning properly and that the buoyancy of each PFD remains effective.
Do PFDs have an expiration date?
PFDs do not have an expiration date. All PFDs should be tested for wear and buoyancy at least once a year.
If a PFD is damaged, waterlogged, smells like mildew, faded, or otherwise damaged, it should not be used and should be discarded.
Are Line + Cleat PFDs approved by the US Coast Guard?
Yes, US Coast Guard approved PFDs must meet government standards. A third-party testing laboratory checks that the PFDs meet these standards. For more information, go to https://www.ul.com/news/world-life-jacket-testing
